Whether you’ve got more ink than a Staples store or your skin is a blank canvas, picking your next (or first!) tattoo isn’t always easy. Many of us experience a strong urge to get a new tattoo—especially if it’s not our first—and often the desire is there before we have any idea what we might want. So if you’re in the market for inspiration, have a read of the tips below and find a design that’s perfect for your next trip to the tattoo parlor.

1. Take inspiration from the person that knows you best (that’s you)

If you’re looking for something unique to you, think about what hobbies, passions and tastes have shaped who you are.

Your love of ping pong, your penchant for the comedies of Kevin James or your admiration for brutalist architecture are all great starting points for inspiration.

If you’re a big film buff or music nerd, your favorite quotes or lyrics would make great, personal tattoo choices. Although do consider those associated with your words of choice: the last thing you want is to have to cover up your latest lyric tattoo after the singer is outed as an unsavory type.

    2. Search for the artist before the art

If you want something that you know will look great on skin, find an artist you love and look through their portfolio.

Artists usually prefer to tattoo their own work, and most will be more than willing to show you what they have available, or will direct you to their favorite past designs.

If you’ve yet to find a favorite tattoo artist, try one of these methods:

      • - Use Instagram to find examples of local artists’ work
      • - If your friends or family have any tattoos that you admire, ask them where they go
      • - Search for local artists online, or use Cosmain to discover professionals in your area.
      1. 3. Give it more than a moment’s thought

There’s definitely nothing wrong with an impulsive decision, but always take a moment to reflect on your tattoo choice before it’s too late. While it might not happen as much as your grandmother makes out, tattoo regret is certainly a thing.

Also make sure you do your research to ensure your tattoo choice isn’t offensive in any way. Consider different cultures and religions, being especially careful with any kind of symbolism.

      4. Be extra vigilant when crossing the language barrier

If you like the idea of getting a phrase or word in a different language—especially one that uses characters you’re not familiar with—double, triple and quadruple check that what you want is exactly what you’re getting. And it’s worth confirming there are no possible double meanings, too!

        5. Meaningful, schmeaningful

One of the main reasons that might delay your next tattoo is if you believe it’s got to be meaningful.

If you think that because that’s your genuine opinion then sure, I’m not going to try and change it. But if it’s because you feel it’s what society has dictated, well to be blunt, to hell with that. Tattoos are personal—it’s totally your choice and yours only as to what you decide on, and how you come to that decision.
